Up-Cycled Candle DIY {Martha Stewarts Craft Paint}

It is starting…. my transition to fall decor.

And I have to say that I have been largely motivated to start the decorating process because of my frist official fall purchase….. some YUMMY fall scented candles.

I am SUCH a sucker for the fall candles.

I just LOVE them!

They fill up my house with such wonderful fall smells and bring back memories of falls in the past.

The only problem with a store-bought generic candle, is that it does not go with my decor…. so I did what any insane crafty woman would do, I up-cycled my candles and really I think that they fit right in now!

And the best part about my up-cycling is that I had a chance to try out the new Martha Stewart Glass Paints from Plaid with a new technique {using adhesive silkscreens as stencils} that I’ve been dying to try!

And it was really simple!!!

Here is what you will need to up-cycle your own candle:

Supplies Needed

Martha Stewart Glass Paint {any color}, candle for up-cycling, and glass paint tools (I mainly used the 1 1/2 in scraper tool.

Step 1.  Peel off the label of your candle and clean the glass surface with soap and water and then rubbing alcohol and let it get nice and dry.

Step 2. Apply the adhesive silkscreen with firm pressure making sure there are no air bubbles

Step 3.  Apply your glass paint to the edge of your silkscreen.  You don’t want to add excess paint in the middle of the design because it will likely seep through the silkscreen design.

Step 4. Use the scraper tool to drag the glass paint evenly over the silkscreen.  You have to work quickly because your goal is to remove the silkscreen before the glass paint dries.

Step 5.  Remove the silkscreen while the paint is still wet, be careful that you don’t smudge your paint.  Let the paint dry for at least 30 minutes before you add another stencil.

**If your paint dries before you remove your silkscreen your paint will not stay on your glass surface (trust me…. I may have tried this just to make sure)

Step 6.  While the paint is still wet go and run your silkscreen under water to clean it up—I didn’t even need to use soap with mine.

So much better that the regular old store-bought look right?!

and even more fall like now right?!

I really can’t believe how simple the technique was once I got a hang of it!  And the cool thing is that the Martha Stewart Glass Paint by Plaid can be used on any type of glass and porcelain surfaces including dishes and cups—it is even top-shelf dishwasher safe!!!!  Just think of the possibilities!!!  I am a little worried…

I am now looking for any and all glass surfaces to play with!!!

Here are some of the other products available from the Martha Stewart Glass paint from Plaid…

Believe it or not, this is just a small sampling.  The line is fantastic!! You can find it at Michaels.

I also have to say that I am very impressed by the colors that are offered in this line of glass paints and really just the overall quality of the tools and paint applicators as well.  They are easy to use and require far less clean-up than most products.  I LOVE that.

What would you like to use Martha Stewart Glass paint from Plaid for??? I would love for you to share your fun ideas!

  1. Love it, they turned out great! I have some candles that need their labels removed also, one reason I hate the glass jar candles. Now I know what to do with them!

  2. This looks so fantastic. What a great way to take affordable candles and give them a really expensive-looking boutique makeover!

  3. It looks fabulous. I love the black lace, I think I’d like to do a decorative tile to hang on my art wall with that stencil.

  4. Gorgeous! I love that doily silk screen !

  5. I really love how this turned out! I am going to go out and buy the silkscreen you used. Love it!

  6. Oh my gosh! They are GORGEOUS!! They look like candles you would find at World Market for more money than you would every want to spend on a fancy candle but would buy them anyways because they are so gorgeous!!

  7. So pretty! These would be perfect for Christmas gifts!

  8. I love how these turned out! So pretty! Great job.

  9. These are really gorgeous! I was thinking that it would be lovely to make something like these for teacher Christmas presents. Sorry I have a few questions though. Are there starter kits or do you have to buy each part separately? About how much would it cost to get started (1 paint, silk screen, tools?) I have never used a silk screen. Will it wear out or will it last indefinitely?

Sorry for all the questions, but I don’t have a Michael’s in my town so I will have to drive a good 30 miles to get there (we have a Hobby Lobby and a Jo Anne’s.). If it is something that I could get a lot of use out of then it is worth the trip because I REALLY LOVE THESE!

  10. Hi! Jamie~
It has been too long since I have stopped by to “visit.” These candles look great. I love the Martha Stewart line at Michaels. I am looking forward to catching up and seeing the progress you’ve made in your home.
