I LOVE all thinks up-cycled and recycled!  I love giving “junk” a new home, a new start and a new life!  I LOVE bargain shopping at thrift stores to find “just the right treasure” to rescue and restore!  And SO I had a LOT of fun working on this little desk up-cycle!

My desk project actually started months ago.  Right before I found out I was pregnant I asked my facebook and instagram friends what they thought about me going to rescue this little desk.  And I got some mixed answers!  Some said yes, go and get it, others said no way, that is junk.  Well obviously I decided to make the 30 minute drive out before coming home that night after work and picked up my desk.  And I was immediately excited to get working on my little project, BUT this was also about the time I started to notice myself get really really tried at night, that night in particular…hummm who knew a really good indicator that you are pregnant is being tired?!  Not this girl!  The night I went to pick up my desk I happened to think I was feeling so strange that I took a test, and officially found out I was pregnant.  And well… once I realized that I couldn’t rely on coffee to get me through my tired evenings anymore I put my desk project on hold (aka it sat out in my living room until I couldn’t stand  it and I FINALLY caved in and moved it to the basement).

But good news, there is a happy ending for my trash to treasure rescue.  Second trimester.  Oh yes, best thing ever!  Hello energy!  And hello little desk that got pushed aside!

My vision for the desk since day one was a nautical girly feel.

Nautical with the stripes of course.

And girly with the splash of magenta that I added to the legs of my little desk!

I really think the new paint job has really given this desk a new life!

And want to know a fun little secret?

Up-cycled Desk DIY via www.craftyscrappyhappy.net

My desk has a cute little pop of color on the inside of it too!

That may even be my favorite part!

So what do you think, do you want to know a few of my painting and up-cycling details?

Here is what I did:

First I started out by having my husband sand and stain the top of the desk for me since I am being a little extra careful now that I know I am pregnant.

Then I gave the rest of the desk a good old couple of coats of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint shade Pure White.  I used chalk paint so that I wouldn’t have to sand the rest of the desk, it goes on thick and adheres enough that you don’t need to sand first–score!

I then used painters tape to create my stripes.  I used ripped pieces of tape to make sure my spacing of the tape was right on.

Talk about a simple way to get great stripes!

I then painted the top.

Next I mixed a few tester paint sample colors I had on hand that I had picked up from Walmart a while back to get the “magenta” color I was wishing for.  I used the Pure White Chalk Paint as my base and then added the tester colors (coral and magenta) until I got the color I was wanting.

I then painted the legs of my table and the inside!

Thats it.  Nice and simple, but enough to make a great statement!
